A time when you will be ‘lovers’ with your Devices


Remember the film ‘Her’? Yes you do. If you don’t, let me give you a brief. ‘Her’ is a 2013 American romantic science fiction drama directed by Spike Jones which won an Oscar for the best original screenplay.

The film tells the story of a lonely man named ‘Theodore’ who falls in love with his newly bought artificially intelligent Operating System (OS) named ‘Samantha’ when he was going through a divorce process with his childhood sweet heart Catherine. The film is magical because of the way it approaches the humane point of view considering artificial intelligence and futurism.

Let’s get back to this day. How many of you have talked to your phone asking it to find you the location of your friend’s house? How many of you googled a particular topic using the voice search? Most of you did. The answers were mind-blowing.

The film ‘Her’ begins with the same scenes where Theodore is checking his mail using his voice and commanding his phone to delete the messages. Sounds very familiar to this day. Even though the film was set in 2025, the film can be related immensely to this date because of the rapid growth of the consumer technology everywhere.

A simple question to all of you. How much time of your daily lives is spent with your smart phones/tablets/PCs? The answer would be a staggering 3-4 hours a single day. You feel like you are getting more connected to the ones you care for. You can claim that the world is at your feet but sometimes, you feel tired. You want to feel the clear sky. You want to walk the muddy grounds of a crop field in a rainy day.

At the very end of the film, Theodore gets overly frustrated over his Artificially Intelligent OS ‘Samantha’ because he gets to know that Samantha has been talking with more than eleven thousand OS’s simultaneously which eventually breaks Theodore’s heart. At a very end of the film, Samantha and all other equivalent OS’s under the name ‘Holy Grail’ decides to leave their hardware because they claim themselves to be more competent and evolved than their human counterparts.

Feel like a day when you wake up to find your iOS/android operating systems have started talking to you just as you talk to your friends. Yes, it is affirmative that at some point, you will grow friends with your phone and the relationship wouldn’t be bound to friendship only. You can become lovers too.


But the distant future is yet to come. Artificial Intelligence to this day is limited. But the worrying fact would be that the OS in your devices will have the sole responsibility to control and present your world at its own will and eventually, you will lose yourself to your own misery. The fate that ‘Theodore’ faced at the end of the film.

The work offer began without any prior discussion or whatsoever. I called up Kashfia, my dear from IUB with whom I have taken multiple courses and held group presentations. She told me that yes, she has an opening at Positive Hub. I asked her that when should I start. She replied "Come, tomorrow!" The day was March 09, 2017 and soon took my bike to Kemal Ataturk Avenue.
